Free flow: Be sure to follow the rules to avoid fines
With the introduction of free-flow tolling, drivers are encouraged to pay for their trips promptly after passing through to avoid fines.
Since there are no physical barriers, the new system allows you to pay without stopping; payment is recorded electronically either through your license plate or your electronic toll tag. Drivers can pay the amount due through various methods, such as visiting a Niro office or using an online payment system.
Fines for Nonpayment
If the driver does not pay the toll within the allotted time, a fine is imposed. These penalties are intended to encourage timely payment and to compensate the network operator for any losses. In some cases, the fines can be significantly higher than the toll charges, encouraging all users to adopt the right habits.
What happens if I don't pay after driving on a free-flowing highway?
After traveling on a free-flow highway, you have 72 hours to pay the toll for your trip by visiting a Niro office or using an online payment system.
If you do not pay the toll within the specified time frame, failure to pay is a violation and will result in a payment notice being sent to you.
If you miss the 72-hour deadline to pay your toll, you will receive a fine that can quickly add up:
- If I pay within 15 days of receiving the payment notice: the fine is reduced to €10, in addition to the toll amount due.
- If I pay between 15 days and 3 months after the payment notice is sent: the fine is increased to 90 €, in addition to the toll amount.
- If I pay more than 2 months after the notice is sent: in accordance with the law, the fine is classified as Class IV, and the amount due is 375 €.

Benefits of Free-Flow Tolling
Free-flow tolling offers many advantages for users. First, it improves traffic flow since vehicles no longer need to stop at toll gates, which significantly reduces traffic congestion. As a highway user, you benefit from greater efficiency and comfort.
Furthermore, smoother traffic flow leads to a reduction in environmental impact because there are no frequent stops and restarts, which limits fuel consumption and reduces pollutant emissions. When a heavy-duty truck stops at a toll booth, it consumes an average of 1 liter of fuel.
