A new toll sticker required to drive on Belgium’s highways?

A new toll for driving on Belgian highways is expected to be introduced on May 1, 2027, in three regions. This fee would take the form of a mandatory vignette for Belgian and foreign drivers.

What is this highway sticker?

The Concept of a Toll Sticker on Belgian Highways

A toll sticker on Belgian highways in Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels would function as an access fee required to drive on certain routes, with enforcement facilitated by the license plate. The purpose of this sticker is to have foreign drivers contribute to the maintenance of the national highway network.

How much will this vignette cost?

The amount of this fee is expected to vary based on two criteria: the vehicle’s pollution level and its age. The fee will range from €90 to €125 per year. Specifically, electric vehicles are expected to pay €90; models certified under Euro 4 and 6 standards will be subject to a €100 fee; and vehicles registered before 2005 (for gasoline-powered vehicles) and before 2010 (for diesel vehicles) will pay €125.

What impact will this have on drivers and the vehicles involved?

Vehicle Categories Potentially Affected

The vehicle categories potentially subject to this toll are cars, RVs, light commercial vehicles, and certain heavy-duty trucks. This segmentation approach would allow for more equitable enforcement while maintaining smooth traffic flow for both regular and occasional drivers.

Possible Exemptions

Not all vehicles would be subject to this fee. Motorcycles, trucks weighing more than 3.5 metric tons, buses, farm tractors, as well as emergency, defense, and police vehicles would be exempt.

How might the verification and payment process work?

Verification of License Plates and Passages

Verification of license plates and passages will be carried out by gantries equipped with cameras and sensors, as well as by mobile teams.

Fines for Non-Payment

If a vehicle is found without a vignette, fines ranging from €70 to €210—depending on the number of violations detected—will be imposed. To avoid these fines, the vignette can be purchased online or at certain gas stations, with a choice of validity periods: 24 hours, 10 days, 1 month, 2 months, or 1 year.
