Free flow for a fluid highway without toll stops
France's free-flow freeways
In October 2022, ALIAÉ commissioned the A79 freeway, the first French motorway to offer free flow tolls over 88km. No more barriers and slowing down, Free flow works by automatically reading your electronic toll badge or registration plate when the vehicle passes the gate.
In December 2024, the A13 freeway between Paris and Normandy became a free-flow motorway covering nearly 210 kilometers.
New routes are expected to feature these tolls without stop or barriers. By 2027, this system should be in place on the A40 motorway between Passy and Annemasse, as well as on the A69 motorway between Toulouse and Castres by the end of 2026.
The advantages of barrier-free toll
More fluidity: No more stopping and queues at the toll gate.
Better safety: No more stress at the toll gate. Free flow reduces the risk of accidents by avoiding slowing down and restarting in groups of many cars.
More sustainable mobility: Fewer stops mean fuel savings and less C02 emissions. Free-flow’s gate requires much less infrastructure than a conventional toll gate, and therefore there has a much smaller footprint.
The benefits of Free flow
What are the results for free flow in France?
Free flow, a gradual change!
The year 2024 saw the opening of several new free-flow freeways. The “flux-libre” (free-flow) system, which allows traffic to travel without barriers, was introduced on June 19, 2024 on the A14 freeway west of Paris.
The changeover also took place in December on the A13 freeway. The 225-kilometer freeway linking Paris to Normandy no longer has toll gates.
One year after its introduction on the A13, 83% of users of this highway report a positive experience, according to an OpinionWay study. In addition, 76% of them are in favor of extending this type of toll system to the entire country.
