How much does an electric charge cost?

With the growth of electric vehicles, the cost of recharging has become a hotly debated topic. Several parameters need to be taken into account: the charging location, the type of charging station - fast or slow charge, the vehicle model and consumption, the operator, the price per kilowatt-hour (kWh)...
Understanding the price of an electric charge is therefore essential for all electric vehicle drivers and companies involved in this booming sector.

The price of electricity

The cost of electricity is the main factor influencing the price of an electric recharge. It is calculated according to the amount of electricity consumed during charging, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Electricity rates vary according to several key factors:

- Variable pricing: electricity rates can vary throughout the day according to demand. Periods of high demand can result in higher rates, while off-peak hours benefit from lower rates. Some electric vehicle drivers plan their recharging to take advantage of the lowest rates.

- Geographical location: electricity costs can vary from one region to another due to differences in infrastructure, energy sources and local pricing policies.

- Electricity suppliers: electricity suppliers may offer their own rates and special deals for recharging electric cars. Some offer specific packages for electric vehicle users, with advantageous tariffs to encourage the adoption of this technology.

Remember to monitor and adjust your recharging habits to optimize your costs when recharging your electric vehicle, by choosing the times when rates are lowest or subscribing to suitable preferential rates.

The cost of a refill varies according to the size of the battery, just as the cost of a diesel refill varies according to the size of the tank. When using a regulated kWh at €0.206, it costs €10.30 to fully recharge a 50 kWh battery (the average for a city car).

Pricing according to type of charging station

The cost of electric charging can vary according to the type of charging station used. There are generally three main types of electric charging station:

- Slow or home recharging: slow recharging is done at home using a standard wall socket or a home recharging station. Home recharging is often less expensive, as it uses domestic electricity linked to residential rates, which are generally among the cheapest. However, using this type of charging, it can take several hours to fully recharge your electric vehicle's battery.

- Accelerated recharging: accelerated recharging stations are often installed in public places such as shopping malls or parking lots. They offer higher recharging power than slow recharging, enabling rapid recharging. The cost of accelerated recharging is generally higher than that of slow recharging, due to higher electricity tariffs and the additional costs involved in operating these public charging stations.

- Fast or ultra-fast recharging: fast or ultra-fast recharging stations are often located along freeways at rest and service areas, or in dedicated recharging stations. They provide very rapid recharging, enabling a large amount of range to be recovered in just a few minutes. However, this level of speed generally translates into a higher cost, as these installations require more complex infrastructures to handle the intense charge.

Electric charging stations are available at all Fulli service areas. Find the map of electric charging stations here.

You can then choose between the convenience and speed of fast or ultra-fast recharging, which often comes at a higher cost, or opt for more economical recharging at home or on accelerated charging stations, depending on your expectations and needs in terms of time and budget.

Different types of billing

Electric car charging rates vary considerably from one network to another, which can sometimes be confusing for drivers. Here are some key differences to consider:

- Per-minute charging: some charging networks charge according to the time your vehicle is connected to the charging station. This is an advantage for fast charging, as users pay for the service provided rather than for the amount of electricity consumed. However, this can quickly become costly if the charging speed decreases.

- kWh billing: other networks bill according to the amount of electricity actually consumed during charging, measured in kWh. This method is considered the most transparent, as it directly reflects the amount of energy used to recharge an electric vehicle. However, rates per kWh may vary according to the electricity tariffs in force and the pricing policies of the electricity supplier.

- Subscription fees: some networks may also apply monthly or annual subscription fees for access to their top-up services. These fees may offer benefits such as reduced rates or additional features for members.

- Differentiated tariffs: some networks offer differentiated tariffs depending on the charging power used (e.g. standard, accelerated, fast or ultra-fast) or the time of day (off-peak vs. peak). This enables users to choose the most advantageous tariff according to their needs and availability.

As a result of this diversity in billing systems, electric vehicle drivers are advised to find out about the specific tariff policies of each network before using charging services. Use the Fulli mobile app or our map of electric charging stations to get the information you need on current tariffs, so you can make informed decisions to optimize charging costs.

Different rates depending on the model and fuel consumption of your vehicle

The price of an electric recharge may also depend on the model and consumption of your electric vehicle. Electric vehicle models have varying battery capacities and energy efficiencies, which affect the amount of electricity needed to fully recharge the electric vehicle's battery.

Electric vehicles with higher-capacity batteries will require more electricity for a full recharge, resulting in higher costs per recharge session. Similarly, the energy efficiency of the vehicle, measured in kilometers traveled per kilowatt-hour (km/kWh), influences the amount of electricity consumed per kilometer and therefore the costs associated with each trip.

So don't forget to take these factors into account when estimating the cost of recharging your electric vehicle, and plan your trips according to your battery's range and the cost of recharging.

It's possible to recharge your electric vehicle for free

Some retailers and shopping centers offer free recharging for electric vehicles passing through their stores. Public parking lots have set up charging points for electric vehicle drivers, enabling them to recharge free of charge.

Establishments such as car dealerships, hotels or restaurants can offer free recharging to their customers. Another option for finding charging stations accessible to all: local authorities. Some communes will offer charging stations to promote the use of electric cars. These charging stations are generally located in public parking lots.
