Everything you need to know about driving your electric vehicle on the freeway

Freeway driving with an electric vehicle can be different from that with a gasoline-powered vehicle, but with a few clarifications and tips on the subject, you'll finally be able to enjoy smooth, efficient driving on the roads.

Get ready to hit the highway

Before you hit the road, it's a good idea to do a little preparation for peace of mind. First of all, plan your itinerary by identifying the charging points available along your route. Remember to use the Fulli application, which will give you access to a map of electric charging points, listing over 400,000 electric charging points, including 120,000 in France. The map will show you the presence of charging stations on your route, for greater fluidity.

Then set off once your batteries are charged. Consider the actual range of your electric vehicle, taking into account driving conditions such as speed and weather.

Don't forget the charging cable: this essential element must be compatible with the various charging points you may find at rest and service areas.

Energy consumption

Electric vehicles consume more fuel on freeways than on urban roads. Several factors contribute to this high consumption:

  1. Firstly, when the electric vehicle is travelling at high speeds, aerodynamic resistance increases sharply, requiring more energy to maintain high speed.
  2. Secondly, long distances covered on freeways, during hot or cold periods, may require prolonged use of air conditioning or heating, resulting in increased energy consumption.
  3. Finally, carrying extra passengers or luggage on long-distance journeys can also increase energy consumption.

To maximize your vehicle's fuel efficiency, Fulli advises you to :

Maintain a moderate and regular speed; limit the use of heating and air conditioning.

Recharging at freeway service areas

Charging electric vehicles is made easier on the motorway network thanks to the continuous installation of charging stations at rest and service areas.

Our charging station map shows the more than 400,000 charging stations available with the Fulli card, including 120,000 in France.

The main feature of the charging station map is its search and filter function. You can search for charging stations close to your current position, or at a specific location. What's more, you can filter the results according to your specific needs, such as the charging power required or compatibility with your connector type. Whether you prefer fast or slow charging, it's easy to find the charging station that's right for you.

Plan your journeys easily and anticipate your stops thanks to the location of charging stations at rest and service areas. Use the Fulli app to locate freeway service areas and charging stations. The app is available on the Android and iOS stores.

Freeway breakdown assistance: the SOS Autoroute app

A breakdown on the freeway can happen at any time, so it's imperative that you follow certain safety rules for yourself and for other vehicles on the freeway;

  • Report your breakdown: Turn on your hazard warning lights. If you can, park on the hard shoulder, as far to the right as possible, leaving enough room for passengers to get out of the vehicle. Never use your safety triangle on the freeway.

  • Contact the emergency services: you have several options: drive to the orange emergency call point, located at all rest areas and every 2 km or less along the freeway, or use the emergency call button on the SOS autoroute application. You can also dial 112, the European emergency number. Only an authorized breakdown service is authorized to intervene on the freeway. The freeway security service will send him to you.

  • Think about your safety: put on your yellow fluorescent vest and position yourself behind the guardrails. All passengers must exit through the right-hand doors, except your pets, which you must leave in your vehicle. Wait outside your vehicle for the tow truck to arrive, which takes an average of 30 minutes.

Use the SOS Autoroute application: a call centre on your cell phone

If you've broken down on the freeway, there's no need to go to the emergency call point, just use the SOS Autoroute application on your phone. This application lets you simulate the operation of a call station, without leaving your vehicle. The SOS Autoroute system is used by the APRR-AREA and ALIAE networks.

The application is available on iOS and Android.
