How do I recharge at a public charging station?
Public charging stations are becoming a must for electric vehicle drivers. Whether on a long-distance journey or in town, knowing how to recharge at a public charging station is essential. Discover the key steps to using a public charging station, from connection to payment.
Find an electric charging station
Before you can charge your electric car, you need to find an available charging station that suits your needs. The Fulli application and charging station map make it easy to locate charging stations around you or on your route, in just a few clicks. You can filter by socket type, charging capacity or real-time availability. The app also lets you view rates and plan your charge with complete peace of mind.
The different types of terminal
Not all terminals are created equal. A general distinction is made between :
Normal charging stations (up to 22 kW): ideal for prolonged parking (errands, work, etc.);
Fast charging stations (from 50 kW): useful for rapidly recovering range on long-distance journeys;
Ultra-fast charging stations (up to 350 kW): available mainly on freeways and major roads.
Choosing the right charging station means saving time and optimizing recharging according to your needs. With Fulli, you can choose the charging station best suited to your needs and enjoy your journey in complete confidence.
Connect to terminal
Once you've found the terminal, you need to think about connecting it. Fulli has thought of everything to simplify this step, whether you're new to electric mobility or a regular user.
When you're in front of a charging station, you'll need a means of payment adapted to the station, such as a charging card. Today, most charging stations don't have a credit card reader, so you'll need to think about bringing a charging card with you.
However, some kiosks allow you to pay by credit card or QR code.
Type of plug and charging cable :
Check that your cable is compatible with your vehicle and the charging station you have chosen. The standard plug used in most of Europe is “Type 2”. However, some charging stations still use “Type 3C” plugs. If you opt for rapid recharging, check which standard is available between COMBO 2 and CHAdeMO. In doubt? Check the cables on our charging station map.
Before you start charging, make sure your car is compatible with the type of socket available. With Fulli, we've thought of everything so that you can plug in easily and with complete confidence.
Start and track the recharge
Once your vehicle is plugged in, it's time to start charging.
- Start the session with ease
Once the cable is connected, simply swipe your charging card over the pay station. If the signal is good, the pay station is unlocked, confirming that charging has begun.
First connect the cable to the pay station, then open the hatch and connect the same cable to your vehicle.
When you're ready to leave, remember to pass the card over the terminal again to unlock the cable.
How long does a recharge last?
Recharging time depends on several factors: the power of the terminal, the capacity of your battery, and the initial charge level.
On a normal charging station (22kW), you need between 2 and 4 hours for a full charge.
On a fast terminal (50kW), you'll recover around 80% in 30 to 45 minutes.
On an ultra-fast terminal (150kW+), some vehicles can recover 300km of range in less than 20 minutes.
How much does a refill cost?
Rates vary according to the charging station, operator and charging capacity. With Fulli, you can check prices in advance on the app. In general:
- Normal charging station: between €0.30 and €0.50 / kWh ;
- Fast charging station: between 0.50€ and 0.70€ /kWh ;
- Ultra-fast terminal: up to 0.80€ (and sometimes more);
Some networks also charge for parking time after recharging. Remember to disconnect your car as soon as you've finished charging, to avoid extra charges.
A few useful tips
- Always check that the session has started before leaving the terminal.
- In the event of a problem, some kiosks have a help button or a telephone number for contacting support.
- Avoid staying plugged in longer than necessary to free up the terminal and allow other users to recharge.
FAQ - What you may be wondering
